VHF Radio Course

Last week Doug went to the Emsworth School of Navigation to take his RYA VHF Short Range Radio Operators Course (DSC)

It was a whole days’ course, very interesting and informative.  We hope to be on the Thames in London later this year and, after that,  on the tidal River Trent so a good knowledge of how to operate the radio is a must.

There was plenty of hands on operation of a marine VHF radio (pictured).  A lot of the knowledge will probably never get used as we have a little handheld radio rather than the ‘Bees’ Knees’ like the one above.  Doug had a very enjoyable day in which he passed the written exam at the end of the course and is now the proud owner of a VHF licence.

In order to end with a nice picture – today (Wednesday) we walked Oscar down to the ‘Bill’ and, as there was a very low tide, we had acres of lovely sand to play on.

Looking inland towards The Bill House, (now a care home)

Looking east – up the English Channel.

  1. Let us know when you are planning on travelling on the Trent and we will listen out for you.

If you see us out and about pop across for a drink or two.

  2. Thanks Naughty-Cal, will definately make contact when we get near you. Likely to be later in the season though. Doug
